Quite so! I'm not a Yamato fan by any means, but I'm actually rather enjoying Space Battleship Yamato 2199. A med student friend of mine from Japan got me watching it, and I have to admit so far it has delivered on all fronts... to the extent that I'm actually looking into picking up the art books for the series. Lovely animation, expressive and dynamic character design, an interesting cast and story, and the updated mechanical designs look pretty nice too. (The fighters aren't my cup of tea, but even they aren't hard on the eyes.)

Yeah and they are staying fairly true to the original story as well from what I have seen.

Yeah and they are staying fairly true to the original story as well from what I have seen. Having never seen the original, I couldn't possibly comment on that... though the story so far has been fairly enjoyable in Yamato 2199. It's interesting to see a modernized peek at the influences behind Gundam and Macross.

Yeah I have watched the original many times. One of my favourites and one of the shows that got me into anime. Even though at the time I didn't know it was anime per se since I was like 6. Space Pirate Harlock was another though I haven't seen that since then. I should rectify that.

That's messed up. I'll still buy it, because heck yes it's a good show, but still... put a little effort into it, guys.

As much as I would love to get the series there is no way I can afford those prices. I will just hope it will show up on Netflix someday like the original series was for a bit.

Watchin' CrunchyRoll on a blu-ray player or other streaming device also blocks ads. CrunchyRoll's selection is mostly stuff that's coming out right now on broadcast or cable over there though... it's not a very good cross-section either. Mostly lighthearted early teens stuff, though you do get occasional gems like Servant x Service and Silver Spoon or darker stuff like Shingeki no Kyojin. Netflix is kind of crap for anime, their selection's tiny and they only recently started offering stuff with subs instead of dubs. Hulu had a good thing going for a while, but their ads are annoying as hell even if you're a paying member and now that Bleach is over and so too is Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, they're not doin' so hot on that front. At the cost of OVAs like Gundam UC and Space Battleship Yamato 2199, I wouldn't count on seeing it on a (legitimate) streaming service anytime soon.
