This is one of my favourite books of all time. It isn't very long. It doesn't play up the romance as the musical does. The only movie ever done to truly show the excellence of this book is the 1920's silent movie with Lon Chaney as the Phantom.

But then, the later 20th century has been ALL about turning "dark" things into bright and cheery. I blame Dismal- err, Disney- for that mood and habit.
	Using emotion without justification to combat logic is like using "nyuh-uh!" as your argument.
