RPG books needed?

If I am new to Robotech - going to start with tactics when it comes out.. are their any RoboTech RPG sourcebooks it would be good to get to familiarize myself with the ruleset ? Or will tactics ruleset be completely different?

Jaymz LaFlamme Yes the tactics rules will be quite different from the actual RPG. However the basic conversion between the two for mecha is supposedly pretty simple (except speed and weapon range is a little.....tweaked but simple enough to extrapolate.)

Duane Stevens Um... the Palladium rule set is probably one of the oldest, ongoing RPG rule sets still in use... And the cumbersome stats, levels, skill percentages, SDC vs MDC damage rules just make things too burdensome.

David Jamieson I think palladium is one of the best systems and I have never had issues with the MDC - SDC rule nor any of the other things mentioned. But I would recommend familiarizing yourself with the world.

Jesse Bates In addition to picking up the current RPG books (as well as the Sentinels book), if you really want to immerse yourself you should also get the anime (available as a big DVD set with all three storylines) and see if you can find the novels.

Jason Whitbeck Been on the fence about getting them I used to like PB system for it's time it was good but IMO it is dated, other systems play better

Is there that huge a difference between Shadow Chronicles and the original main Robotech book?

I don't have Shadow Chronicles, or any of the manga size reprints...

The rules themselves? not really much change as you well know I am sure. The stats? Well tehy are quite different by and large though i still rewrite them to be more accurate.

As in, in Shadow Chronicles they up scaled or down scaled the power levels? A lot in comparison with the old books?

Well some of the weapons got increased. Others stayed the same. Everything pretty much went up in MDC with a notable exception being the two lighter Cyclone models.
