So, for some reason, I decided to make a Rifts/PF crossover character. Partially inspired by a topic on the FB group, I wondered about a character from the Arab world (other than Egypt).... And I ended up with this. I'm still working on the character, but I have his background...
****************************************************************************************************
As a boy growing up in the Arabian Peninsula, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn ibn Nur had heard tales passed down from generation to generation, of the ancient world, and the history of the Arab peoples. At the age of 8, he decided that he was going to take after his namesake, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn Yūsuf ibn Ayyūb, better known as Saladin, and re-unite his people into an Empire.
He immediately began training in the ways of warfare. He recognized that in the modern (post-apocalypse) word, he would need to figure out how to bring magic into the ways of war, something normally forbidden by his peoples religious beliefs. He believed that if he only used magic that was blessed by Allah, that it would be acceptable.
As he began experimenting, he began to hear a deep voice, whispering in his ear. This voice identified itself as Gabriel, the Archangel, the same voice that had given guidance to the Great Prophet! When he told his family, they immediately said that he was hallucinating, and that “nobody heard Angelic voices anymore!”.
But he believed. Following the guidance of the Archangel, Salah quickly learned how to do perform wonderous feats of magic. The Angel then instructed Salah how to open a portal that would allow a Heavenly Host to swarm forth, ready to conquer the world in the name of Allah.
Salah complied, and one night, at a crossroads of Ley Lines, during a planetary alignment that coincided with a full lunar eclipse of a full moon, he opened a Rift. It was also Salah’s 10th birthday.
Alas, it was no Heavenly Host that poured forth.
Creatures even more horrible than the normal D-Bees poured forth, and immediately began killing and eating people! Destruction reigned, as Salah stared blankly at the carnage. Then a figure loomed over him. The figure stood 16 feet tall, it’s red skin bulging with muscles and it’s crimson bat-like wings flexing slightly. The Beast smiled, it’s toothy grin reaching almost to the curled horns on top of its head.
And when it spoke, Salah heard the voice, and knew that he had been nothing but a childish fool. A fool who allowed pride to destroy his people.
“Thank you, Salah ad-Din, for allowing an army of Dyval onto your world. There are so few direct portals. But, now that this one is open, with such POWER, we will help it grow, until the full army of Diabolus can walk through”.
Salah ad-Din knew that he couldn’t allow that. Even if it meant his death, he must stop them. He began casting another spell, while the deevil laughed.
“Come child, I will make you a hero! A ruler over a world of the dead! Don’t you wish to be a new Saladin?”
“As Saladin would, I will die for my people.” As the energies poured from his body, the Rift began to tremble, fluctuating wildly. When the explosion happened, Saladin thought he would die. But then he felt the tingle of teleportation magic, and grabbed on. Instead of death, he found himself elsewhere. Looking around, he saw the Beast deevil laying nearby, wounded and hurting. Stumbling over to it, in a move that he thought was more for show than for reality, Saladin plunged his knife towards the creature, expecting it to repel off of its skin. Instead, his blade sank deep, finishing the job the magical explosion had started.
As he began exploring, he realized he wasn’t on the same world anymore. He was alone. He had the magical ability that he could probably return home, but he believes that Allah had a reason for sending him here. So here he will remain until he knows why.
**************
In the few years since Saladin arrived on the Palladium World, he has made friends and enemies. He now believes that his reason for coming here was to raise an army of heroes to return with him, in order to fight and crush the deevils. Slowly, he is building that army.
There is a stronghold in the Baalgor Wastes that houses several hundred people, all either warriors or magicians. They have dedicated themselves to following Saladin, and in turn, Allah. They have all converted to Islam (as Saladin knows well enough to teach it), and are working to become his army.
Unrealized by many, the birth of Islam on the Palladium world is slowly opening the way for the deity Allah to be as linked to this world as he is the world of Rifts Earth.
